Helpful tips to improve your site's SEO

Backlinks

DO – Gain backlinks through relevant affiliates in your industry, ie. A network of dentists.

DO – Encourage keyword focused anchor text in your backlinks. If someone links back to your site through an article, having a link such as “a great dental clinic in Calgary” is more beneficial than just a link such as www.dentist.com. This is because search engines will see those keywords in the anchor text, and will relate them to your site.

DON’T – Sign-up for link schemes or online link networks. Search engines look down on this practice, and may penalize your site for being involved with these. Also, you may be linked up with irrelevant sites that could harm your ranking, or even link spam to your site.

Title Tag

DO – Write meaningful, helpful page titles that let the user know immediately what your site is about.

DON’T – Simply just stuff a ton of keywords into the title, because A) It could confuse your users, and B) You may not be targeting what people are actually searching for, which leads to the next point…

DO – Research and find out what users are actually searching for in your local industry. For example: Avoid just adding in a bunch of keywords like “dentist, implants, fillings, dental” but have something like “Dentists in Calgary” or “Calgary Dental” in the title, as users tend to search with specific phrases like that.

Domain Name

DO – Consider using domains with keywords in the name. For example: www.MetropolisDentalClinic.ca, with this domain you have some good keywords, such as a location name and what service your site offers. Not only does that benefit the user, and they will already have a good idea of what your business offers, and where you work out of, but search engines will also pick those keywords up.

Of course, businesses will often want to use their company name in the domain, which is completely fine. In that case, you can still use more keyword specific domains for promotions and landing pages.

DON’T – Go overboard with the above point and create a domain with dozens of keywords, such as www.TheBestCheapestReliableCalgaryDentistDentalClinic.ca. Remember, the first rule of choosing a domain name is being simple and memorable.

Content

DO – Write content that is informative and concise. Try to inform your users of your services and/or product as soon as possible so that they don’t have to search around your site much to find out what your business does.

DO – Try and put info about what you do and where you are located in the first 100 words on the home page. Not only will your users get all that useful info quickly, search engines will scan that content first.
