If you need further proof that Social Media is a valid way to promote yourself, look no further than the “color status” phenomenon that swept across Facebook last weekend. All over the globe, thousands of women were sent and forwarded a message that encouraged them to post the color of the bra they were wearing in their status in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer. Guess what? It worked. Tens of thousands of women changed their status messages and colors flooded Facebook.

This campaign, for lack of a better word, was so successful in fact that it has become the most searched trend on Google. Hmm… it seems to me that Facebook and Social Media in general is a pretty powerful medium.

Now, take the color example and apply it in a different context. As a business, how could you make this work for you? Easy. If you have a fan page created, for every person who adds you and becomes a “Fan” of your business, they typically have hundreds of friends. All of those friends get regular updates on what their friends are up to, so they will see that people are becoming fans of yours. Now, build on that by making it worth their while to be your “fan”.

What can you offer on your Facebook page that people can’t get from your website? Maybe real time information or questions answered. Depending on your business you could offer tips, tricks, coupons, deals, information, or items of interest that reflect your business and make it enticing to be your “fan.”

Play with it a little bit, because after all Social Media is a much more relaxed and casual advertising medium than traditional or other internet marketing efforts. Try something, if it doesn’t work, try something else. Because after all, the beauty of Social Media marketing is that there are very low barriers to entry and it’s not going to cost you a bundle.
